Ortho Evra Dangers WSAV.com 01/23/2005 - Most hormone delivering birth control carries some risk, but this relatively new product may be more dangerous than other birth control on the market. Shannon and her husband Will are happily married, but not ready to start a family. So Shannon takes preventative measures by using the Ortho Evra birth control patch. "I only have to put it on once a week. I don't have to, everyday, take another pill and try to do it at the exact same time everyday," she says. Just last week Shannon's impression of her easy to use contraception changed when a letter from her doctor arrived. "We are writing to inform you, as a patient who has received a prescription for Ortho Evra birth control patches, about a recent important development about this medication and it's potential side effects," she reads. Patch maker, Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals, recently discovered the patch can deliver up to twice the estrogen hormone as the pill. Those levels, doctors say, put you at higher risk for blood clots, which can cause heart attacks and strokes. Doctors nationwide are calling patients in to reconsider their birth control options. Shannon says, "Better to be safe than sorry, if there is another form of birth control out there that will work just as well and not have the same dangerous things with it. Then it is better to do that." We spoke with representatives of Ortho McNeil Pharmaceuticals who make the patch. They say it is safe if used as directed and have posted information on their website, www.orthoevra.com.
If you are using the patch, and want to switch, doctor's say don't remove it until you have another type of birth control to replace it. Most doctors will change your prescription over the phone without requiring an office visit.
